Having first formed in the Gera district in 2004 with just 25 members shortly after the Ethiopian governments initiative to relax the regulation of their coffee exchange, a group of smallholder farmers organised themselves in a bid to better market and export their coffee to buyers across the globe. Calling themselves Nano challa the cooperative bought its first penagos 500 pulping machine in 2010 and is now 600+ members strong and known all over the globe for its high quality and unique landrace varietals cultivated under some of the last rainforest canopies in Ethiopia . This cooperative was one of the first members of the Technoserve putting a focus on quality and sustainability for its members and all round better practices offering their farmers a way out their low income predicament. Meaning “best in the area of challa” nano challa was one of the founding members of the Kata Murduga Union and Tilahun Mamo the current chairman of the cooperative belives the success of these farmers is due to the fact they have stayed close to the traditional farming methods of their ancestors and have brought in a wide range of native varietals from the region. They have done a fine job balancing agriculture and conservativation of the nearby Oromia Forrest for centuries. It is rare that you will find such a traditional, true agrarian society as that of the Gera District, home to the world renowned Nano Challa Cooperative.
